Cyprus issue deadlocked after Ocalan affair: Denktash

ANKARA, March 4 (AFP) - Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash
said Thursday that efforts to resolve the intercommunal conflict in
Cyprus were deadlocked following the capture of rebel Kurd leader
Abdullah Ocalan.
"Until the trial of Ocalan is over and while the Greek-Cypriot
administration continues its pro-PKK attitude, there will be no
negotiations," he told Turkish newspaper Milliyet.
"The Greek Cypriots have shown their true colours in the Ocalan
affair and there is no longer any grounds for understanding," he
added.
Ocalan, leader of the rebel Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) was
captured by Turkish agents in Kenya last month in possession of a
Cyprus passport after being sheltered at the Greek ambassador's
residence in Nairobi.
Denktash, whose self-proclaimed "republic" in northern Cyprus is
recognised only by Turkey, said the Greek Cypriots should have
accepted a proposal he made last year for a confederation of "two
equal states" on the eastern Mediterranean island.
"They could come to regret their decision," he said.
Cyprus has been divided since Turkey invaded in 1974 following a
coup by Greek Cypriots who sought to unite the island with Greece.
