Germany's FM calls on Kurdish rebels to cease armed struggle

ANKARA, March 5 (AFP) - German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer
called on the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) to lay down its arms
and to pursue its aims by peaceful means, in an interview published
Friday by the Turkish daily Hurriyet.
"They should lay down their arms and pursue their aims
peacefully," Fischer told the paper. "This is very important."
"Turkey has a good chance now to solve this problem if it acts
wisely," Fischer said, referring to the PKK's armed struggle for
Kurdish autonomy in southeastern Anatolia.
"On the one hand, it is a criminal problem, on the other hand
there are political and cultural problems as well," he said.
Fischer renewed his call for PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan to be
given a fair trial.
"I know there are strong and deep-rooted emotions involved, but
the trial must nevertheless be fair, no more and no less," he said.
Ocalan was captured in Kenya last month and hauled back to
Turkey, where he is currently awaiting trial on treason charges.
