Keep away from Ecevit, Kurdish rebels warn population

ISTANBUL, March 5 (AFP) - Kurdish rebels have warned the
population of Diyarbakir in southeastern Turkey that anyone
attending Turkish Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit's planned visit there
on Sunday will be punished, the pro-Kurdish DEM news agency reported
Friday.
The Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) distributed leaflets in
Diyarbakir "recalling that Ecevit had an important part in the
capture of PKK chairman Abdullah Ocalan and is the number one enemy
of Kurds," DEM said.
In the leaflets, the PKK called on the population to stay home
during Ecevit's visit on Sunday.
Businessmen who participated in Ecevit's meeting would be
punished, it warned.
Ecevit plans to travel to Diyarbakir, the regional capital of
the predominantly Kurdish southeast, on Sunday to present an
economic investment package aimed at reviving the region.
According to Turkish press reports, Ecevit was advised against
travelling to the southeast.
