Ocalan's lawyers to travel to prison island on Tuesday

ANKARA, March 8 (AFP) - Two Turkish lawyers representing jailed
Kurdish rebel leader Abdullah Ocalan will travel to the prison
island where he is detained for the rebel leader to formally
designate them as his lawyers, one of the lawyers said on Monday.
"I will go to Imrali island tomorrow (Tuesday) with lawyer Hasip
Kaplan with a notary," lawyer Ahmet Zeki Okcuoglu told the Anatolia
news agency. "We will meet with Ocalan and he will give us a power
of attorney in the presence of the notary," he added.
Okcuoglu is one of 15 lawyers who have volunteered to represent
Ocalan, the leader of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), and he met
with his client on Imrali, northwestern Turkey, last month, along
with another colleague, Hatice Korkut.
But the meeting lasted only 20 minutes and took place in the
presence of two masked soldiers, Okcuoglu said.
A day after meeting the rebel leader, Okcuoglu announced that
the defence team were suspending their work until the state could
guarantee their security.
"We will defend Ocalan, but we are waiting for the state to do
its duty," Okcuoglu said last week, referring to the lawyers' demand
for security guarantees.
Turkey's Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit has denied that the
lawyers were in any danger and accused the attorneys of attempting
to put the Turkish judiciary in a bad light.
Ocalan, who was captured in Kenya and brought back to Turkey
last month, faces charges of treason and separatism and could be
sentenced to death if convicted.
