Kurdish rebel party denies responsibility for Istanbul bombing

ISTANBUL, March 16 (AFP) - The Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK)
denied responsibility for a bomb attack that killed 12 people at an
Istanbul department store, a PKK spokesman told AFP by telephone
from Vienna on Tuesday, contradicting claims by Turkish
authorities.
"This is not the PKK's style," spokesman Erol Polat said,
quoting a statement by PKK commander Osman Ocalan, brother of PKK
leader Abdullah Ocalan who was captured last month by Turkey.
"The PKK dissociates itself from the attack and would not do
such a thing," he added.
Polat said the attack was possibly the work of another extremist
Kurdish group, which had claimed responsibility for an earlier bomb
attack and criticized the PKK for being soft.
The PKK earlier this month announced it would "intensify the
war" against Turkey and called for a "victory offensive that
recognizes no rules".
